An all in one collagen serum just seems improbable. Targeted design is generally better than a so called ‘all rounder’. Just imagine for a second if you had a facial cream that was also a body cream and was also a heal balm and doubled as foundation. Wouldn’t that make you just a tad suspicious?

I have my personal favorites in skin care. I do my own research to fulfill my own criteria’s. You should too. Don’t simply buy into the nice shiny packaging or the outlandish claims. Put your objective thinking hat on, think about different skin types, think about whether or not skin glow is real, and decide for yourself whether you are looking for 1% active ingredients or do you want collagen levels that are at least a certain percentage of the active ingredient.

Make your own criteria list and do not buy anything that doesn’t fit that list. Your face will thank you for that and most likely you will make a far better decision than just relying on the marketing materials that each companies put out.

I have already written previously about the nasties that you should have out of your skin care product, today I would like to share with you ingredients that I believe should be in ever skin care product, not just sejaa pure skincare.

1. Vitamin C: Makes the top of the list because of its crucial role in the production of collagen. Vitamin C should be known as the universal vitamin of the body. It is the most well known and most researched all of the vitamins. The benefits range from as you already know, enhance collagen synthesis which aids the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines.

It is a primary antioxidant which reduced the oxidative load on the body. This means that free radicals are quenched when they encounter vitamin C. It is a team player generally enhancing most other vitamin activity.

2. Vitamin A: hard to find in its pure form. Generally in skin care products it is used as a derivative known as retinoid. The main function is to increase skin turnover to help smooth the complexion. Vitamin A helps repair cellular damage in the epidermis as well as help in the repair of blood vessels. Vitamin A helps reduce the size of oil glands in the skin there for diminishing pore sizes and scars.

3. Vitamin E: works in conjunction with vitamin C and A to from the ACE group. A very powerful antioxidant. It is particularly involved in the protection of the cellular membranes. The fatty acids, lipoproteins and any bodily structure that has a fat based constituent are protected by vitamin E. The greatest effect is on age and sunspots as well as aiding in the repair of scars through boosting the skins moisture retaining capabilities.

4. Green tea extract: numerous studies have shown protection against skin cancer. It is postulated to work via an antioxidant activity therefore reducing the harmful effects of the suns rays.

Green tea also appears to reduce inflammatory responses of the skin. Another exciting piece of research shows anti- matrix metalloproteinase activity. This activity results in degradation of the skin matrix leading to premature aging. Green tea extract stops this from happening.

5. Ascophyllum nodosum: This is a brown kelp extract. It is a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals. Found mostly in the northern Atlantic Ocean. It has such a high concentration of nutrients that it is used as fertilizer.

Some of the things you will find in the kelp extract are micronutrients like iron, zinc, copper, manganese. There are also a lot of proteins, polysaccharides, organic acids and amino acids which makes this an incredible ingredient to have in your skin care regime.

When you take a look at your next skin care product check them out for the active ingredients listed above. The problem is not trying to find a great product. The problem is finding a great anti aging skin care cream that doesn’t contain nasty ingredients. So, what I have decided to do is compile my top 10 most hated ingredients and why you could and should avoid them too. Here we go.

1. Silicone: The problem is that silicone clogs your pores. It is used to form a film which prevents moisture from evaporating but at the same time this prevents your skin from breathing and functioning effectively.
Commonly used in foundations and concealers to make them feel smooth on the skin. Just think, next time you use a product with silicone you are wrapping your skin with a layer of plastic. Not nice.

2. Parabens: can come in either ethyl, methyl and all other -thyl parabens. Found is a whole host of products like skin care kits, day creams, moisturizers, shampoos and even sometimes as food additives. Parabens have been shown to mimic estrogen which is linked to an increased risk of cancer especially of the breast. On the other hand it can also disrupt the normal testosterone function. Why take the risk?

3. Artificial fragrances: too many to list individually but if I see that a skin care product lists fragrance I avoid it all together. Most fragrances are fat soluble and they have particular affinity to the brain. They can wreck havoc most common symptom is getting headaches. Also fragrances often have phthalates which are used to make plastic more pliable, imagine what that is doing to your brain?

4. Alcohol: this can be any derivative of alcohol, methanol, ethanol and the like. Alcohol is a powerful solvent and in hospitals is used to completely disinfect hands and equipment. It dries out the skin, kills everything in sight, predisposing you to premature aging of the skin.

5. Sulphates: Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laurete sulphate are harsh detergents and have the same effect as alcohol which dries out the skin and causes premature aging.

6. Petrochemicals: the petrochemical industry has a lot of byproducts, you would think that a byproduct would be discarded but instead they put in it skin care of all kinds. Mineral oil for instance coats the skin and forms a layer that prevents moisture from leaving. Also prevents proper detoxification of the body. When you skin cannot detoxify, you accumulate nasties and overtime become prone to developing a whole host of skin conditions.

7. Urea: often preceded by imidazolidin or diazolidin, this compound acts as a preservative and through decay releases formaldehyde. A potent cause of dermatitis, and should not to be used under any circumstance. Did I mention urea is the main by product in the formation of urine?

8. Dioxane: petroleum derived product which is commonly processed with ethylene oxide. Avoid anything that has polyethylene glycol or PEG in it.

9. Amines: DEA/TEA/MEA are ammonia based compounds that form nitrosamines when in contact with nitrites. Used primarily as foaming agents, these compounds cause strong allergic reactions, eye irritations and dries out the skin and scalp.

10. Synthetic colours: generally made from coal tar these contain heavy metals which are toxic to human beings and can deposit permanently in fat tissue and accumulate over years. They are all carcinogenic. The scary thing is that almost anything with FD&C or D&C contains these scary colours.

I love natural skin care products and I spend a lot of time reading labels to look at the active ingredients but also the supporting ingredients whether it be a moisturizer that I am buying or essential oil or a nourishing night cream.

Never buy a skin care product just because of the brand. Never purchase something just because the packaging looks nice and that it promises to “reduce wrinkles”.

Did you know that no matter what skin care product you buy if you use it for 6 weeks you will see a noticeable improvement in your skin? Irrespective of the objective assessment. It is crazy, the mind is so powerful.

When you do your own shopping, have a standard set of questions ready to ask. Do you know how the ingredients will affect your face? Does the face mask I am about to buy have heavy metals? Does this oil/mud/moisturizer have any components that can be toxic to my body long term?

You need to know the names of the ingredients; you need to have standards when purchasing skin care products.

Let me give you an example.

Sejaa pure skincare kit comes with a day cream and night cream and a mud treatment mask. The day cream has argan oil, multiple essential oils and vitamin C. The night cream has extracts of green tea and ginseng. The mud mask has well…mud.
